Scientists: Like Humans, Goats Have Accents

Do you ever think that the sound “baaaa” coming from goats actually come with accents?

Just like dolphins and elephants, goats also have certain accents. Dr. Elodie Briefer and her fellow researchers at the Queen Mary University, London, recently conducted a research to find out about goat’s accent.

They studied pygmy goat kids’ vocalizations from their early age, 7 days. The second phase when the goats are studied is when they are about 5 weeks old. In the first phase, the goats spent most of their time in a small group with their close relatives. In the second phase, they entered a larger group namely crèches.

They found that goats could change their calls according to the phase they entered.

“We found that genetically related kids produced similar calls, which is not that surprising. But the calls of kids raised in the same social groups were also similar to each other, and became more similar as the kids grew older. This suggests that goat kids modify their calls according their social surroundings, developing similar ‘accents’.”

This phenomenon is called vocal plasticity by the scientists. It’s one’s ability to change vocal sounds according to their social environment. This ability is common to human, but most other mammals don’t have the same ability. The other mammals might get the ability from their parents, or genetically.

The findings had been published in Animal Behaviour journal.
